Avery Eye Clinic in Shop Conroe

Shop ConroeWhen Dr. Baptiste Dejean scrubbed for surgery several months ago, it was for a procedure that not every ophthalmologist would have considered. It wasn't the surgery, cataract removal, that made the case unusual. It wasn't even the implantation of a high-tech, multifocal lens. What made the surgery out of the ordinary was the fact that the patient was Dejean's own mother, Edwina Dejean. While some physicians might fear losing their objectivity while operating on family members, Dejean, a partner at Avery Eye Clinic, had a different rationale for performing his mothers surgery. Another is a Hurricane Katrina evacuee whose dire vision problems were made more difficult because all of his ophthalmologic records were lost in the storm. Dejean worked extensively with the patient, who needed emergency glaucoma surgery.

NASA APPROVES ADVANCED LASIK FOR USE ON ASTRONAUTS

While LASIK has been in use for almost a decade, it wasn’t until it advanced to become an ultra-precise, all-laser procedure that NASA approved it for use on astronauts.

WHAT IS ADVANCED LASIK?

NASA’s approval of LASIK came after extensive review of the U.S. Navy’s clinical data resulting from the use of both the IntraLase® Method and Advanced CustomVueTM Procedure. The most advanced form of LASIK may be performed on its candidates using precise measurement, and femtosecond and wavefront-guided lasers in the two-step process.

LASIK HAS “THE RIGHT STUFF”
  • An estimated 50 percent of rejected NASA candidates are dismissed due to poor vision.
  • The physically demanding, extreme zero-gravity conditions that astronauts endure make even simple contact lens care and maintenance a challenge.
  • The advanced, all-laser LASIK procedure has also been cleared for U.S. military personnel, including Naval aviators, and most recently, Air Force pilots.
  • Consumers looking for proof that LASIK is safe, effective, and advanced enough for them need look no further; LASIK has proven it has “The Right Stuff.”
  • The NASA decision was made following review of extensive Department of Defense clinical data which validated the combination of advanced all-laser LASIK technologies provides excellent safety and vision.
