In the past, glasses and contact lenses were the only options available to correct vision problems, also referred to as refractive conditions. With the latest advancements in technology, excimer lasers and surgical procedures have provided several other options to correct vision problems. The important question is to find the procedure that is best for your eyes and specific vision requirements.
Avery Eye Clinic physicians and surgeons are considered leaders in laser vision correction or LASIK According to many patients, LASIK is "a miracle" and results are instant. Patients who have relied on eyewear or contact lenses for years are astonished at their ability to see objects clearly across the room or to read a clock just minutes after the procedure.
The doctors at Avery Eye Clinic will work with you to determine if you qualify for laser vision correction and which lasik eye surgery option is right for you.
Most importantly, you can find out at no cost or obligation. At Avery Eye Clinic, an LASIK eye surgery consultation is available at no cost. Contact us today to set up your consultation. It may very well be one of the best decisions you'll ever make.
LASIK Eye Surgery Candidate?
Who is the typical patient for LASIK eye surgery?
Most commonly, LASIK eye surgery is used for patients that are nearsighted (myopic), farsighted (hyperopic), and/or have astigmatism. Moreover, the patient usually has a vision prescription that has been relatively stable and has not rapidly changed recently. Patients also have generally good eye health.
Patients are usually young enough and do not have any cataract formation (cataracts are not uncommon in the 60’s) and are old enough for their eyes and prescription to have stopped changing significantly (typically 19 to 25 years of age).
Avery Eye Clinic offers a no obligation, complimentary LASIK eye surgery screening to help determine if you are a candidate. Only through a thorough examination is your doctor able to determine what vision correction option is right for you. If your doctor does not think LASIK is the answer for your specific circumstance, he will work with you to determine what is the right method to correct your vision. LASIK is only one of the many options you have at Avery Eye Clinic.
It is important to also note that medical conditions can have an impact on your success with any surgical treatment. For example, patients with diabetes may develop cataracts earlier in life, have unstable eyeglass prescriptions from uncontrolled glucose levels, or have retinal problems which create difficulty in obtaining a good result with surgical or glasses correction. The Avery Eye Clinic team will evaluate each of these complex factors when you receive a thorough eye examination. Also, women who are pregnant should typically wait a few months after delivery or nursing before undergoing LASIK. Be sure to inform your doctor of any medications you may be taking as they may cause changes or fluctuation in your vision.
Physical conditions that may impact or reduce your success, or increase your risk with LASIK laser vision correction include:
- Keratoconus (thinning and asymmetric steepening of the cornea)
- Cataracts or diabetic retinopathy with loss of vision
- Uncontrolled glaucoma
- Amblyopia (lazy eye)
- Severe dry eyes
- Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren’s syndrome
- Keloid scars after surgery
- Current use of Accutane, Cordarone, or Imitrex
Because contact lenses temporarily alter corneal shape, patients who are interested in LASIK vision correction should stop wearing their contact lenses for a minimum of two weeks if they wear soft contacts. If they wear hard contact lenses, they should wait a month to six weeks before the testing is completed for the surgical correction. Your doctor is often able to obtain a general idea of whether you might benefit from LASIK even if you are wearing contacts, but you will still have to remove the contact lenses to make sure your cornea is stable.
